Beginning as a caddie before moving on to a successful playing career, Fred Wood switched his focus when he was appointed Head Professional at Shaughnessy Heights in 1945. He was instrumental in the re-location of Shaughnessy to its present location, and throughout his 28 years at the club he mentored a number of Assistants who later went on to be successful Club Professionals. Wood served as President of the PGA of BC from 1955-1956.

The Fred Wood Class "A" Professional of the Year Award is one of the highest honours the Association can bestow on a working Class "A" Professional at a golf course, whose total contributions to the game best exemplify the complete PGA of Canada Professional. This award embraces a wide range of services executed by the club professional.

The Fred Wood Class "A" Professional of the Year:

  • Demonstrates outstanding qualities of leadership
  • Demonstrates strong moral character
  • Maintains a substantial record of service to the Association and the game of golf
  • Is well-regarded as a role model to other PGA of BC Golf Professionals
