Membership Status Changes

Whether you're stepping away, moving zones, or coming back after time off, here's what you need to know and who to contact.

Transferring · Leave of Absence · Reinstatement · Resigning

Transferring

Moving between Canadian zones

Notify both your former and new Zone office immediately.

  • Your former Zone transfers your membership file and application materials to the new Zone.
  • The new Zone reports the transfer to the National Office (Membership Co-ordinator), who updates the database and issues any refund or invoice.
  • You'll need to meet the new Zone's requirements and provide any information its Board requests; once you do, you receive the privileges your category allows.

Dues adjustment: If you transfer after June 30, no difference in Zone dues is charged or credited. If you transfer before June 30, any difference is charged or credited.

Moving between PGA of BC and another country

The PGA of Canada accepts direct Class "A" transfers from the PGA of America, Britain, France, and Australia. You'll need to provide your Zone office with:

  • Proof of current Class "A" status
  • Proof of employment in Canada
  • Full contact information

Your Zone forwards this to the National Office's Membership Co-ordinator, who issues an invoice.

Transfer requests from any other PGA, or from the LPGA, are reviewed case-by-case by the National Office.

Candidates for Membership transferring in from another country's PGA: only formal education credits transfer. All other PACE program components must be completed fresh. Candidate transfers are not accepted from other countries' Associations.

Leave of Absence

For members who need to step back temporarily without resigning.

Eligibility: Available to any Member, Apprentice, or Candidate for Membership in good standing with no outstanding debt. Approval is at the sole discretion of the National Board and must be pre-approved. Maximum duration is 12 months.

Qualifying reasons:

  • Medical — requires supporting medical documentation
  • Maternity — requires supporting medical documentation
  • Sabbatical — requires proof of enrolment in an educational program

While on leave:

  • No membership dues, but insurance premiums must still be paid to stay covered.
  • No reinstatement fee applies when you return.
  • You won't receive a membership card during the leave.
  • You cannot enter nationally conducted tournaments, vote at AGMs or special meetings, or hold office as a Director.
  • Candidates for Membership cannot work on TCCP or core competencies while on leave,  but the time on leave is added back onto your 6-year program maximum, so you don't lose progress.

Zone-level privileges during a leave are determined by your Zone Board.

To apply: Contact the PGA of Canada directly.

Reinstatement

Coming back after resigning, being suspended, or letting your membership lapse.

To apply: Submit a written application to the PGA of Canada National Office before June 1 of the year you want to reinstate. If accepted, you'll pay the reinstatement fee, current dues, and any outstanding balance owed to the Association.

Missed your dues deadline? If you're suspended for non-payment (30 days past due, or 10 days after a registered suspension notice), you still need to apply for reinstatement, but no exam is required unless you've been out more than 5 years. The re-entry fee is listed on the reminder letter sent after a missed deadline.

For Class "A" Members, by time away

Time out of the Association What's required
3 years or less No additional evaluation. If you held a Certification, you must meet current maintenance standards for it.
More than 3, up to 10 years Class "A" Evaluation required. Same current-standard rule applies to any prior Certification.
10 years or more Full Class "A" requirements from scratch. Same current-standard rule applies to any prior Certification.

If you've already been reinstated once under the "3 years or less" rule and lapse again for more than a full year, you move to the Evaluation requirement — and a second lapse over 10 years resets you to full Class "A" requirements.

For Candidates for Membership

The 6-year maximum from your original Candidate start date still applies — time away counts against it.

  • Reapplying within 1 year of suspension or resignation: apply in writing to the National Office; your original 6-year deadline stands.
  • Reapplying after 1 year: you must restart the program.

Resigning Your Membership

Any member in good standing, with no outstanding debts to the Association, may resign at any time.

How it works:

  • Submit your resignation in writing to the National Office.
  • Before it's accepted, any outstanding balance at the Zone or National level must be cleared.
  • The Zone forwards your written resignation to the National Office, who will process it, remove you from the database, and send you a letter requesting your membership card back — along with information on insurance transfer options.

Dues and insurance refunds:

Resignation date Refund
On or before April 1 Full refund of dues
April 2 – June 30 Pro-rated refund of dues and insurance
After June 30 No refund of dues; pro-rated refund of insurance only

Refunds are issued once your membership card is returned to the National Office.

Changed your mind? If you want to come back later, see Reinstatement section and please note National approval is required.
