Campbell River, BC (PGA of British Columbia) - Following the first round of the 2026 G&G Brands and Callaway Golf Pro-Assistant Championship at Campbell River Golf Club, three teams are tied for the lead at 9-under par: Helene Delisle and Coulton Sheets (Fairwinds Golf Club), Luke McKenzie and Caleb Voth (Ledgeview Golf Club), and Andrew Smart and Zac Carson (Nicklaus North Golf Course).
Forty-three duos made up of a PGA of BC Head Professional and Assistant Professional teed it up in the first round shotgun start best-ball competition. Campbell River Golf Club presented a formidable challenge with its tight fairways and deceptive greens.
Fairwinds' Delisle and Sheets enjoyed a flawless round today, recording nine birdies and avoiding any bogeys.
"We were just supporting each other constantly. Personally, I had a swing thought to do a mini pause at the top of my backswing. Coulton kept reminding me to do the pause at the top and was so supportive," said Delisle. "He's a very long hitter, and his iron play today was very accurate. We didn't make any mistakes on the same hole. I had a bad hole and Coulton had a good hole, and vice versa."
Sheets said a key moment came on the par-3 16th when Delisle sunk a long-distance putt for birdie.
"She made a bomb off the fringe. It was 45 feet, sliding downhill. It was perfect speed, dead in the heart, Helene made the putt."
Ledgeview's duo of McKenzie and Voth reached 9-under with 10 birdies and a bogey, including a spectacular stretch from the third through the seventh holes that saw them make five consecutive birdies.
"We made five birds in a row on our back-nine, we were on a bit of a heater," said McKenzie. "Ham-and-egging it, hitting great shots. When I didn't hit it well, Caleb came up big."
Voth said McKenzie’s putting was the engine behind several of their birdies, particularly as the pair built momentum during their five-hole run.
"When McKenzie's rolling the rock the way he does, he's a genius. A genius with the putter!"
Nicklaus North's team of Smart and Carson matched Fairwinds' flawless scorecard, compiling nine birdies to reach 9-under and a share of the lead.
Smart said he was fortunate to be teamed with an elite all-around player in Carson.
"Zac hits it really long and really straight, hits it close to the hole and makes putts. I drive the cart and rake bunkers sometimes when I need to."
Despite Smart's modesty, Carson said he delivered when it mattered most on multiple occasions today.
"We didn't really make anything too long, but we hit it close enough that we were able to make birdies and take advantage of the spots we needed to," said Carson. "There were a couple times when I hit it out of position, and then Smarty brought it back in and made a couple clutch pars. We knew we wanted a couple birdies coming home to finish the day and we made it happen. It was awesome."
Two teams are tied for fourth place at 8-under, just one shot back of the lead: Peter Hopley and John Mlikotic (Gallagher's Canyon Golf & Country Club), and Sergej Dronov and Mewail Kidane (Pacific Golf Academy (Richmond)).
Two teams are tied for sixth place at 7-under: Lindsay Bernakevitch and Tyson Girardet (Victoria Golf Club), and Paul Whittingham and Scott Merriam (Cranbrook Golf Club).
