Victoria, BC (PGA of BC) - Round One of the PGA of BC’s 2025 Seniors’ & Women’s Championships presented by Honma Golf and Levelwear took place today at Cordova Bay Golf Course, with Doug Morgan (Richmond Country Club) taking the early lead in the Seniors’ Championship, while Jaya Rampuri (Riverway Golf Course) has a one-shot cushion heading into Round Two of the Women’s Championship.
Morgan, the 2017 and 2022 PGA of BC Seniors’ champion, had a consistent and steady front-nine, making a birdie on the par-5 2nd hole and a bogey on the par-4 5th to make the turn at even-par. Morgan said he gained momentum on the back-nine, where his elite accuracy helped him secure the lead.
“I kept it in play and hit it close a couple times. I had a nice run on the back nine, birdied 12, 13, and 14,” said Morgan.
Morgan said his best shot of the day came on the 13th tee to set up a birdie.
“I had a nice little chippy 6-iron into the par-3 13th to about six feet.”
Hoping to overtake Morgan tomorrow, several Seniors’ competitors sit within striking distance of the lead. Fraser Mulholland (Vancouver Golf Tour) shot 70 (-1), including a birdie on the par-5 18th, to sit one shot back of the lead. Kendal Yonomoto (Savage Creek Golf Club) fired an even-par round to sit third. In fourth place, Chad McAdie (Cheam Mountain Golf Course) finished at 72 (+1). Shooting 73 (+2), Luke McKenzie (Ledgeview Golf Club) and defending champion Bryn Parry (Seymour Creek Golf Centre) round out the top-five.
Jaya Rampuri leads the Women’s Championship field following her 72 (+1) today. After a stress-free opening nine with nine straight pars, Rampuri’s resolve and determination were tested by a challenging three-hole stretch that took her to 4-over and included a double-bogey on the par-3 11th. Birdies on the 14th and 15th propelled Rampuri back into contention. Facing a one-stroke deficit as she teed off on the 18th, Rampuri made a clutch eagle on the par-5 closing hole to secure the Round One lead. She was the only professional to make an eagle on the 18th hole today in both the Senior’s and Women’s fields.
“I was hitting the ball well all day, but I had a tough hole on 11. Mentally, I couldn’t get it together for a bit. On 14, I was standing on the tee box. I said to myself, ‘Stick to your game plan, focus on your targets and make good swings,’ and that’s what I did,” said Rampuri. “On 18, I knew I had to do something special to be in that final group tomorrow. I hit a really good drive, then an 8-iron to five feet and made eagle.”
One shot back of Rampuri, two-time champion Christine Wong fired a 73 (+2) today. Tied for third place, Kyla Inaba (Predator Ridge Golf Resort) and Jessica Claggett (Two Eagles Golf Course & Academy) each shot 74 (+3). Diana McDonald (University Golf Club) and three-time champion Ashley Zibrik (Shaughnessy Golf & Country Club) are tied for fifth place at 4-over.
