Richmond, BC (PGA of BC) - Taking place at Victoria’s Cordova Bay Golf Course, the PGA of BC’s 2025 Seniors’ & Women's Championships presented by Honma Golf and Levelwear will be contested next Monday, June 23 and Tuesday, June 24.
Cordova Bay Golf Course offers a scenic, parkland-style layout with ocean views and immaculate fairways. Glimpses of Haro Strait and Mount Baker add to its natural appeal. Director of Golf James Goddard said that architect Bill Robinson’s layout can be deceptive in its challenge.
“On the surface, the golf course looks fairly easy, but you better putt your ball,” said Goddard. “When we hosted the Canadian Tour for the first time, we had guys showing up like Mike Weir, just salivating: ‘We’re going to be 20, 24 under. This course is a pushover.’ The winning score was the highest winning score of the season. It looks benign, but the greens are very subtle and difficult.”
As Vancouver Island’s first certified Audubon Sanctuary, Cordova Bay Golf Course is home to over 80 species of birds. Goddard said he encourages competitors to keep their eyes out for the fascinating variety of wildlife, including his personal favourite, the eagle.
Bryn Parry (Seymour Creek Golf Centre) is the defending Seniors’ champion after winning his first Seniors’ Championship title at Nicklaus North Golf Course last year. A consistent contender at PGA of BC championships, Parry said he’s approaching this weekend with an adjustment to strategy as he recovers from an injury suffered earlier this season.
“I’ve had a bad back since our first tour event and have only played five rounds of golf since then. To tell you the truth, I’m making it up on the fly. I’ve gotten myself to the point now where I’m not in pain, but I have limited range of motion. I’ll have to take what my body gives me,” said Parry.
“I’ve been thinking about my strategy. On this course, there’s an opportunity to attack the par-5s. Depending on how my body is feeling, I may or may not be able to go for them in two. I’ve been working on my wedge play in case I have to lay up. I talked to [Cordova Bay Professional] Nate Ollis, and he said the fairways are like carpets. Hopefully, I’m making good contact and can control my distance and spin to make some birdies that way.”
On the Women’s side, Taylor Kim (Beach Grove Golf Club) secured her first victory at the Women’s Championship in 2024. Top contenders in the 2025 field include Christine Wong, who won the event in 2020 and 2023, and Ashley Zibrik (Shaughnessy Golf & Country Club), who has three career titles in 2012, 2018 and 2022.
Wong said she is feeling optimistic and has momentum as she prepares to seek her third Women's Championship title.
“I feel like my game is trending in a great way. I’ve had a couple weeks back-to-back, playing the BC Women’s Open and then the Glencoe Invitational. I’ve been on the golf course all day, every day and the game feels good,” said Wong.
The PGA of BC would like to thank Honma Golf, Taylor Hull (Sales Director, North America), and Brent Clements (Regional Sales Manager, Eastern Canada & Northeast US) for their support of the event.
The Association also extends our appreciation to Levelwear, Bob Else (Director of Sales, Canada), and Sam Gordon (Territory Sales Representative) for their patronage.
Finally, the PGA of BC is grateful to Director of Golf James Goddard, Head Professional Lance McCullough (The Ridge Course at Cordova Bay), and the entire Cordova Bay Golf Course team for their time and efforts in advance of the championships.
