Summerland Golf & Country Club assistant professional Greg Machtaler was the runaway winner for the 2013 PGA of BC Player of the Year title.

Machtaler won three PGA of BC tournaments in 2013, including the PGA of BC Championship at Salmon Arm in a playoff over Seymour Creek's Bryn Parry.

Machtaler started his year off with a win at the Assistants' Championship in Chilliwack, narrowly beating Olympic View's Gordy Scutt. Machtaler dedicated that victory toa friend of his who had recently passed away.

One month later, Machtaler, along with his boss, Tye Babkirk, won the Pro-Assistants' title at Gallagher's Canyon, narrowly edging out Olympic View's Kevin Maxwell and Matt Matheson. Later in July, Machtaler participated in the PGA of BC Pro-Junior at his home course, and while he didn't win, he did make news with a double eagle on the 18th hole.

In August, Machtaler capped his PGA of BC "Summer of Greg" by beating Parry and Gorge Vale's Edd Boudreau in a playoff at Salmon Arm. Boudreau had been eliminated on the first playoff hole and on the second, Machtaler chipped in from the fringe to dispatch Parry.

But August also saw Machtaler with another big win, as he ventured to Quebec for the Canada Cup. He shot back-to-back rounds of 63 on the weekend to beat the best club professionals in the country and cash a $30,000 first-place cheque.

In September, Machtaler finished in a tie for third at the PGA of Canada Assistants' Championship in Saskatoon. Machtaler played that tournament with a heavy heart, as he was mourning the passing of his father, who died suddently at the end of August.

Machtaler was also recognized as the Interior recipient of Apprentice of the Year. He was runner-up to Olympic View's Gordy Scutt for the provincial honour.
