Chilliwack Golf Club Apprentice Professional Zach Olson leads the 2022 PGA of BC Championship presented by Axis Insurance through the halfway mark.

AUGUST 22, 2022

PITT MEADOWS, BC (PGA of British Columbia) – Zach Olson of Chilliwack Golf Club continues his fine play this season and finds himself in the lead of the 2022 PGA of BC Championship presented by Axis Insurance at the halfway point.

Olson posted a bogey-free opening round of 4-under par 68 on Monday that sees him in a familar spot - atop the leaderboard.

The only blemish-free round of the day at Pitt Meadows Golf club, Olson's round featured four birdies - on the 4th, 8th, 10th, and 18th holes.

“To be honest, I didn’t hit it particularly great out there today" he started to described his round. "But I putted really well out there. Whenever I got in a little trouble, I managed to get up and down. So that was the key to keeping my round going and posting a good number” he finished.

Olson currently has a commanding 16-point lead in the 2022 PGA of BC Order of Merit, after a win at the PGA of BC Assistants’ Championship presented by Arbor Memorial in June at Sandpiper Golf Course in Harrison Mills, BC. Additionally, he has picked up a win on the Lower Mainland’s G&G Tour earlier this season at an event held at Capilano Golf & Country Club.

Although a non-Order of Merit event, he and Chilliwack Golf Club Head Professional Ryan Tofani added a victory at the 2022 G&G Brands & Callaway Golf PGA of BC Pro-Assistant Championship last month at Crown Isle Resort & Golf Community. The Pro-Assistant Championship is a team-based event, comprising of two PGA of BC professionals from the same facility.

Olson vies to etch his name in the William Thompson trophy for the first time, along with the $6,300 winner's cheque.

Posting 3-under par rounds of 69 and just one stroke back are Nigel Sinnott (Cheam Mountain Golf Course) and Seymour Creek Golf Centre’s Bryn Parry.

Parry, a four-time PGA of BC Championship winner, has fond memories of Pitt Meadows Golf Club where he learned the game.

“I was working in the back shop as a 14-year-old and remember watching Jack (Nicklaus) win the ’86 Masters on a tiny TV in the shop with former Professionals Gord Fairbairn, Rick Parkinson, and Neil Roberts. That’s how I got addicted to golf and joined the club as a junior member the following year.

"The club has evolved over the years but it's great to be back", he adds.

Myles Johnson (Hillview Golf Course), Nate Ollis (Cordova Bay Golf Course) and Cody Bell (Sunset Ranch Golf & Country Club) all posted 2-under par rounds of 70 and sit in a tie for fourth place. Shadow Ridge Golf Club's Mark Kitts sits alone in 7th place with a round of 71.

A full field of 99 golf professionals from all over British Columbia are competing this week, fighting for a piece of the $35,000 purse.
