womens championship preview - players to watch

The 2014 PGA of BC Women's Championship will be contested September 8th & 9th at Surrey's Hazelmere Golf Club. British Columbia's best female PGA of BC professionals will tee it up for the chance to add their name to the long list of prestigious winners - many in search of multiple titles.

Leila Harman of McCleery Golf Course will be among the strongest contenders for the title at Hazelmere. The 2003, 2010, and 2011 champion will be looking to add a fourth title to her resume in a tournament in which she has enjoyed great past success. Chartrand recently welcomed her second child and will return from maternity leave September 1st in time to compete.

2012 champion Ashley Zibrik of Shaughnessy Golf & Country Club comes into the event following strong performances in the 2014 PGA of BC Assistant's Championship and PGA of BC Championship, where she tested her game against the province's top male professionals. Zibrik acts as commissioner of the Srixon PGA of BC Tour - a capacity that requires her game to be sharp to compete week in week out with the Lower Mainland's best. Look for Zibrik to contend late into Tuesday's play.

Although she is making her PGA of BC competitive debut, Riverway Golf Course's Salimah Mussani is no stranger to competitive golf. Mussani is known as a strong player in Canadian women's circles, having captured the PGA of Canada Women's Championship in 2007. Mussani played college golf at Stanford University, later returning as part of the coaching staff. Her resume includes LPGA Tour events and stints on the Symetra Tour - look for that experience to help her at Hazelmere.

Since 1962, Hazelmere Golf & Country Club has been one of the Lower Mainland's top public facilities. From 2006 to 2008 Hazelmere hosted the Greater Vancouver Charity Classic, and acted as competitive site for the 2010 BC Summer Games. The championship layout will play ~6000 yards for the event, and will provide a strong test for competitors.

Prior to the competitive golf, the event will feature an educational component - bringing together some of the BC golf industry's top female professionals to share their experiences with competitors. Noted performance management expert Pam Paquet headlines a strong speaker lineup, which will also include Hazelmere's own Patti Jonas and Kathy Stecyk of Northview Golf & Country Club among others.
